Musical Grid - Simple Step Sequencer

What Is This?

Musical Grid is a simple, browser-based step sequencer that lets you create musical patterns by clicking on the squares in a grid. Each row represents a different sound, and each column represents a step in time. When you press play, the sequencer moves from left to right, playing the activated notes as it goes.

With multiple waveform options and adjustable volume control, you can customize your sound to match your creative vision. Choose from sine, square, sawtooth, or triangle waves to give your patterns different sonic characteristics — from smooth and mellow to sharp and digital.

It's designed to be intuitive and fun — no musical experience required! Whether you're a professional musician looking for inspiration or someone who just wants to play with sound, this tool is for you.

Why I Built This

I created Musical Grid because I'm intrigued by the intersection of music and technology. I wanted to build something that:

• Makes music creation accessible to everyone
• Provides a moment of creative play during a busy day
• Demonstrates how simple patterns can create complex rhythms
• Offers sonic variety through different waveforms and customizable volume

This project started as a coding experiment and has evolved to include multiple sound options and user controls, growing into a tool that I hope brings joy and entertainment to others.

Getting started is effortless:

• Choose your sound from the dropdown to select different waveforms - each offers a unique character:
  • Sine Wave: Smooth, pure tone - perfect for mellow patterns
  • Square Wave: Sharp, digital sound - great for electronic beats
  • Sawtooth Wave: Bright, cutting tone - adds energy to your sequence
  • Triangle Wave: Warm, mellow sound - ideal for softer compositions
• Adjust the volume using the slider to set your preferred listening level (0-100%)
• Click any square in the grid to activate a note at that position
• Press "Play" to hear your pattern loop continuously
• Use "Random" to generate inspiring starting points
• Hit "Reset" to clear the grid and start fresh
• Click "Share" to copy your pattern to the clipboard for sharing with others
